ESO Term Glossary

There is a bunch of lingo and acronyms used in ESO which can be hard to decipher, especially to those who are new to MMO games. Please feel free to leave a comment with any more terms that you can think of that can be added to this list.

 

ESO TERM GLOSSARY

TERM MEANING
SNARE Slows Movement Speed By A Percentage (Eg 50%).
CC (CROWD CONTROL) Abilities Or Effects Which Control A Target Or Targets (Eg Snare, Immobilize, Stun, Knockback).
IMMOBILIZE Completely Stops Movement Of Target And Roots Them To Their Position For Duration However Target Can Cast Skills And Abilities.
Immobilize Is Removed With A Roll Dodge Or A Cleansing Effect Such As Purge (Alliance War Skill) Or Purify (Templar Class Skill Synergy).
STUN Target Is Unable To Move Or Use Any Abilities Or Perform Any Action For The Duration.
Stun Us Removed With Break Free (Cc Break).
DISORIENT Target Is Unable To Move Or Use Any Abilities Or Perform Any Action For The Duration However This Effect Is Removed As Soon As Damage From Any Source Is Taken Or Break Free (Cc Break).
DOT (DAMAGE OVER TIME) An Ability Which Causes Damage Over A Specified Time. Multiple Dot Effects Can Be Applied To A Target From Different Abilities However Using The Same Ability Will Simply Refresh The Timer For The Dot.
AOE (AREA OF EFFECT) An Ability Which Casues Damage To Multiple Enemies In A Specified Area. For Example Volley From The Bow Skill Line Casues Damage To Enemies Within An 8M Circle.
ROLL DODGE A Move Which Casues Player To Roll In A Particular Direction Which Allows Player To Dodge All Imminent Incoming Attacks And Removes Immobilizes / Roots. Costs Stamina.
BREAK FREE (CC BREAK) A Move Which Allows Player To Remove Cc Effects Such As Stuns And Disorients (Not Immobilizes / Roots) And Costs Stamina.
KNOCKBACK Knocks Over Target For A Short Duration (No Stun Or Immobilize). Can Be Removed With Break Free (Cc Break) However Knockbacks Do Not Last Long.
BLIND Gives An Enemy A Higher Chance To Miss.
FEAR Causes Target To Loose Control Of Themselves And Run In A Random Direction For A Duration.
Fear Is Removed With Break Free (Cc Break).
OFF BALANCE Target Is Unable To Perform Any Action For A Short Duration. During This Time If Hit By A Heavy Attack Target Is Knocked Back.
BLEED A Physical Damage Over Time Effect Applied By Various Abilities Such As Twin Slashes (Dual Wield).
POISONED A Poison Damage Over Time Effect Applied By Various Poison Abilities Such As Poison Arrow (Bow).
TAUNT An Ability Which Casues Npc Enemies To Attack The User Of The Ability. These Abilities Are Used By Tanks To Control The Attention Of Bosses And Prevent Enemies Attacking Weaker Or Less Armored Players In A Group.
ROOT Same As Immobilize: Completely Stops Movement Of Target And Roots Them To Their Position For Duration However Target Can Cast Skills And Abilities.
Immobilize Is Removed With A Roll Dodge Or A Cleansing Effect Such As Purge (Alliance War Skill) Or Purify (Templar Class Skill Synergy).
AD Aldmeri Dominion
One Of Three Alliances.
EP Ebonheart Pact
One Of Three Alliances.
DC Daggerfall Covenant
One Of Three Alliances.
AGGRO Attention Of A Particular Enemy On A Player. A Tank May Use A Taunt Ability To Draw The Aggro Of A Boss. When You Walk To Close To An Enemy You Will "Aggro" The Enemies And They Will Attack You.
AVA Alliance Vs Alliance (Player Vs Player).
BUFF An Ability Which Provides A Short Term Bonus To A Particular Stat Or Skill. For Example Immovable Buffs Armor By 1000 For Several Seconds.
DEBUFF A Short Term Detrimental Effect Applied To An Enemy. For Example A Reduction In Armor Caused By The Puncture Ability (1H/S).
DK Dragonknight
NB Nightblade
DPS Damager Per Second
Used To Measure Damage Effectiveness.
Note That Dps Is Not Always An Accurate Measurement Of Damage Effectivness As Other Aspects Normally Apply Such As The Number Of Enemies, The Level Or Enemies, The Nature Of The Fight And The Total Time Used For Measurement.
TANK A Role In A Group Of Players Which Aims To Attract The Attention Of The Hardest Hitting, Most Damaging Enemies In Order To Protect Weaker, Less Armored, Group Memebers.
Tanks Generally Make Use Of Taunt Abilities And Damage Mitigation (Buffs, Damage Shields, High Health And Armor) In Order To Take Large Amounts Of Damage Over The Duration Of A Fight.
HEALER A Role In A Group Of Players Which Aims To Heal And Support Other Group Memebers And Ensure The Survival Of The Group.
FPS Frames Per Second
Used To Measure The Performace Of A Game.
LFG Looking For Group
Used By Players Looking To Join A Group.
LF Looking For
Used By Players Looking For Things Such As Groups, Guilds And Items.
LFM Looking For Members
Used By Groups Or A Group Leader Looking For Members To Join The Group.
HOT (HEAL OVER TIME) An Ability Which Provides Healing Over A Specified Duration.
MOB A Group Of Enemies.
NERF A Decision By Game Developers To Reduce The Effectivness Of A Particular Game Aspect. For Example A Skill May Be Changed To Be Weaker.
NPC Non Player Character
All Of The Ai In The Game.
PVP Player Vs Player
Used To Describe All Content Where Players Can Attack Other Players.
PVE Player Vs Enemy / Environment
Used To Describe All Content Where Players Can Attack Non Player Characters.
OOM Out Of Magicka
Used To Describe A Player Who Has Run Out Of Magicka.
OP Over Powered
Used To Describe An Ability Or Aspect Of The Game Which Is Too Powerful For A Situation.
PUG Pick Up Group / Public Group
A Group Of Players With No Prior Connection To Each Other (Guilds, Real Life, Etc).
EXP (XP) Experience Points
These Are Gained Through Quests, Fighting, Dungeons, Etc. Experience Is What A Character Needs In Order To Increase Their Levels.
INSPIRATION Experience Points For Crafting Professions
Gained Through Crafting And Crafting Writs.
WTB Want To Buy
Used By Players Wanting To Purchase An Item.
WTS Want To Sell
Used By Players Wanting To Sell An Item.
WTT Want To Trade
Used By Players Wanting To Trade An Item For Another Item.

    I don’t know term ‘MMO’ which you used in your text line “…There is a bunch of lingo and acronyms used in ESO which can be hard to decipher, especially to those who are new to MMO games…”. Please add MMO as a term in your list and explain. Thank you in advance. 🙂

      Oops I didn’t even realise haha. I have added it to the list. I plan on revamping this list soon to include more and also reformat it to look nicer. 🙂

    you should probably add the terms “proc” and “procced” to your list. other than that it looks pretty thorough. well done.

    I Agree lets get a list of the dungeons and trials. Everytime somebody puts LF to run nSS vHOF, ncoh, nhrc, ncr+3 or any of those i am learning them but i have not become proficient. I could see beginners could use this information.
