Don't have weapons in suggested traits?
No problem, most of the traits are now more in-line with each other. The difference between them in terms of DPS is small and it's all situational. However just keep in mind, I recommend reaching around/over 50 - 60% spell critical without any mundus stone's. Also what come's to amount of penetration, Id recommend reaching around 10000 - 11000 so keep that in mind when deciding what traits/mundus stone you're gonna be using.
Don't have some of the recommended armor pieces?
You can switch around the gear depending on what you have or can access. If you're newer to the game, I recommend using Seducer set as a replacement to Julianos, which is easily craftable and requires only 3 traits. If you have some other sets (for ex. Scathing Mage, Burning Spellweave, War Maiden) you can still use those and achieve great DPS, don't worry about it unless you really need to do the maximum damage possible. However Julianos is what you should be aiming for, as its fairly easy to get (requires 6 traits to craft or you can get someone else to craft it for you/buy it from any guildstore).
Don't have trial Jewelry yet? You can use something like Willpower or any other Jewelry you like. Anyways blue trial jewelry (Moondancer/Infallible Aether) is very easy to obtain.
As for Monster Set's, you can use or not use them at all. Grothdarr and Ilambris achieve the best damage, but in some situations using set pieces like Ice Heart and Slimecraw can actually be better, it depends on whichever you like the most.

Mundus Stone: Apprentice/Lover/Thief
Food: Max Health & Magicka Food: SOLITUDE SALMON-MILLET SOUP
Potions: Essence Of Magicka, Spell Power Potions
Swappable abilities and items: You can swap our main spammable Funnel Health to Force Pulse.
Since Morrowind patch, it's better to use Funnel Health as our main spammable ability as its much cheaper to cast, provides better sustain even though it deals a little less damage than Force Pulse.
Siphoning Attacks / Harness Magicka to Sap Essence for better AOE damage, but with slight sustain hit or in situations you don't need magicka shields that much. If you swap Siphoning Attacks, you can use one Magicka Recovery Glyph on your jewelry to gain the sustain loss back but with a little loss of damage.
Haven't unlocked Shooting Star ultimate yet? No problem, instead slot this Soul Harvest or Soul Tether.

More magicka sustain set-up: If you're having issues with running out of magicka too quickly, or just for some reason like this setup more, use this. Take note that you're gonna gonna have roughly 4000 - 6000 less magicka, but way more magicka recovery. We need around 10 - 12 attribute points in health to reach 17000 health.
Attributes: 52 Magicka, 12 Health, 0 Stamina

Champion Point Tips
THIS BUILD IS NOT UP TO DATE, UPDATED BUILDS CAN BE FOUND AT: www.shredgaming.com/
About CP Points:
Depending on how much penetration you have available (If using sharpened weapons, lover mundus, light armor passive etc) you have to calculate how many points you need in to Spell Erosion. Take note, if you play in group, you may have many other debuffs applied to the enemy such as Major Breach (+5280 Penetration for everyone), Crusher Enchant applied by tanks etc, so leave room for atleast 7000 penetration, which will put you around 9000 - 11000 penetration depending on your group. If you have to add more points to Spell Erosion, take them from the stat you think you need the less. If you have to take points from Spell Erosion, slot them in to Thaumaturge.
This is only an example of how you should approach the point allocation.

THIS BUILD IS NOT UP TO DATE, UPDATED BUILDS CAN BE FOUND AT: www.shredgaming.com/
Love the build! Could you add recommended gear to use while you’re farming the legendary gear? Like crafted sets etc.
Thanks! Yeah in the gear section there’s a few options listed: Julianos/Seducer. Julianos is only a small step behind of Scathing Mage DPS -wise so I recommend using it until you eventually get all pieces Scathing Mage. If you’re however new to class/having some sustain problems, Seducer might be the right set for you.
Noticed it just after I posted the comment, sorry about that 🙂 Ended up crafting the Julianos set. Haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, but seems like it will be great!
Yes, you can do any endgame content with Julianos just as good as with Scathing Mage. It ain’t holding you back from anything other than 1-4k DPS, which is very situational.
I was wondering if this build works with vampirism. Is it worth trying?
Yes it works, the vampire passives gives 10% recovery bonus on both stamina and magicka, which is important especially on Morrowind patch.
Nice looking build, friend! But I have a question. Do you think it’s better to have all divines, or to mix divines and infused? Just wondering just in case.
Thanks!
All divines is the best. If you anyhow go over 70% crit, then go with Infused on big pieces maybe. But you shouldnt go over 70% unless you’re pairing your scathing/julianos with Mothers Sorrow, so just get all divines and you’re set.
If you manage to get like 1 or 2 pieces of the set in Infused only, just use them. Its almost zero difference really.
Thanks! One more thing. Are monster sets essential for this build? Can i only use one piece of the monster set instead of two? Can I just skip wearing a monster set altogether?
Well not essential but highly recommended. If you don’t want to use a specific monster set, you can go with one piece sets like ex. 1 piece Valkyn Skoria and 1 Piece Grothdarr.
If you don’t want to use monster set at all, I’d go with Heavy Julianos Helmet and Medium Julianos Shoulders and then use 2x Julianos Swords on front bar and Julianos Inferno Staff on your backbar.
At the top of the page, you state the race as Altmer, but lower down you state Dunmer. Should it be High Elf or Dark Elf?
Oh that must be a accident. Yes dunmer is the best race for this build. Altmer is more than fine too, it has better sustain.
In the armor section, you say that the shoulders should be medium and the head should be heavy. Does it have to be this way? Or, for stylish purposes, can I have the medium/heavy piece be something else?
Really it doesn’t matter which pieces are heavy/medium/light as long as you have 5 light, 1 heavy, 1 medium.
But usually people wear Heavy/Medium helmet and Heavy/Medium Shoulders because monster set’s drop in all weights, not just in for example. light as all the 5 piece sets like scathing mage we’re using. So you see, Scathing Mage come’s only in light armor, as its dropped set, so monster set is our only option where to go with Heavy/Medium.
However, if you’re using crafted equipment, you can go Heavy/Medium wherever you want, just keep 5 light, 1 heavy and 1 medium.
The reason for why we’re wearing our armor like this is because of this Passive Ability in our Undaunted Guild Skill Line.
There’s a passive called Undaunted Mettle which unlocks at Lvl 9 “Increases your Max Health, Stamina and Magicka by 1%/2% per type of Armor (Heavy, Medium, Light) that you have equipped).”
Which will increase all your max attributes by 6% which is a lot. Hope this cleared this thing a bit to you 🙂
In there an option with heave or medium armor in the chest slot (maybe switching head with chest o shoulders with chest)? I don’t like to see an assassin with the skirt 😀
No, unless you use crafted sets such as Julianos or Seducer.
But instead of using a robe version of Scathing Mage, use Jerkin, which will result in normal looking armor without skirt. Result is gonna look like this: https://eso.mmo-fashion.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2015/08/eso-xivkyn-ancestor-silk-light-armor-jerkin-male.jpg
^^ without the helm and shoulders though.
In the monster sets section, you mention three possible monster sets that you believe would work for this build. Would Molag Kena also work?
Well yeah it works, but I don’t see it useful anymore since the sustain nerfs. I’d say when it procs, you be out of magicka in few seconds, which results in DPS loss.
But really? I don’t know, I have kena myself but can’t test it at the moment.
Is there any particular reason why you haven’t mentioned Mother’s Sorrow?
Not really, I feel like listing too many sets make’s it more confusing. Mother’s Sorrow only offers us spell critical, which we already have a lot so its basically useless for us, unless you pair it with set like Seducer. If you get over 60-70% critical, anything over that amount is basically a waste and is better to get more like max magicka or spell damage instead.
With Full Best-In-Slot gear we already stand over 70% critical chance. Anyways, you can use mother’s sorrow as a 3x Jewelry and weapons if you don’t have anything else. But Willpower is overall much better choice (also you can buy it) and is about same DPS as Moondancer/Infallible Aether.
This build is the best and most fun I’ve ever tried for magblade and every question I have is answered in it. Thank you!
Thank you very much! Glad you like it.
I occasionally vote, but NEVER leave commentary. That said, I felt compelled to tell you how much, as a fairly new player, I appreciate this build. Every question I could ask is addressed! Really well thought out and presented. Thank you! I’d love to see more builds from you.
Kontempt
Thank you! I’ll try my best to be as informative as I can, but at the same time to not provide too much information which could be potentially useless. I’m currently working on a few builds that I will be releasing soon as I have tested them enough to make sure they’re viable for end-game content.
I currently have 2 other builds released here:
https://esoacademy.com/builds/stormfist-stamina-sorcerer-pve-morrowind/
https://esoacademy.com/builds/shade-morrowind/
big fan of all 3 of your builds, thinking about doing a merge between the shade and spellblade if it’s possible. might drop cripple for shades. any insight?
Thanks! My advice is, don’t drop crippling grasp since it’s our only and very strong DoT. I think its best to drop Inner Light from backbar and replace it with shades. If you want to go with lightning staff front bar, you could slot Dark Shades instead of Siphoning Attacks since lightning staff provides great sustain and therefore Siphoning Attacks become more useless.
Play with the setup and find what works for you!
would you recommend the necro set if i’m still dual wielding and using the shades on back bar?
Yes of course, otherwise there wouldn’t be any point of running shades on your bars! You can try 5x necro, 2x Grothdarr/Ilambris, 2x Swords on frontbar and 1x Inferno backbar.
what do you think of 5p necro 5pc scathing?
or maybe 5 pc julianos with crafted med/hev for undaunted and 5 pc necro
Ive been using the previous build before the morrowind update. But now my game updated to the morrowind patch but I havent buy the morrowind expansion just yet. So my question is should I keep using the old build or this build. If i should use this build then how can i reset my skills so I can build this one?
“Morrowind Patch” is a base game patch that applies to every player. The patch made alot of changes to everyone’s gameplay. They changed Champion Point system alot, they removed some previously useful perks and added a few new ones, thats why the build needed to be updated. You dont have to own “Morrowind” to get these changes, its only for the content in Vvardenfell.
But yeah, switch to this build, everything’s the same except a few skill changes, but it plays exactly the same way as the old build. Reallocate your champion points, reset your skill points if you have to and apply these changes in this build to your character!
Video about how to respec your skill points: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU3ccfLKUXw
Or written guide: https://esoacademy.com/faq/where-can-you-reset-respec-skills/
Champion Points can be reseted and changed by opening the champion point perk menu and you will see the option there, it costs 3000 gold to change your champion point allocation.
Ok thanks man I already loved the old build.
If you don’t have the mage guild ult what can you replace it with?
Soul Harvest, a morph of Assassination skill line’s ultimate ability.
Or Soul Tether, a morph of Siphoning skill line’s ultimate ability
Is torugs pact a good set to use for swords? I was also thinking I could have torugs pact swords, inferno staff, helmet, and shoulders as a placeholder until I can get monster sets and maelstrom
Is this a good idea?
Yes it gives you some extra spell damage which will come in handy. Also the health and resistance bonus is nice for survivability, so go for it if you want, as they’re only placeholders! Seducer set would also be nice since it gives you max magicka and recovery.
Is this a good build to run trials?
Yes. I main a magicka nightblade and have completed vMA and veteran trials with this builld.
Awesome! Thank you for the reply!
Should I use a lightning or inferno staff?
If youre asking what to use on your backbar, then Inferno is the best for single target damage. Lightning staff works also, it has better AOE damage and resource sustain via easier heavy attacks.
Nice build, but what if I want to use invisibility? Can I swap a skill for that?
And I see that you more recommend scathing mage over Julianos, but isn’t julianos better?
You dont need invisibility in PvE content. This build is made for trials and dungeons, not overworld playing where you could basicly use whatever skills you want. But if you for some reason want invisibility, swap your magicka shield Harness Magicka for the cloak.
Scathing Mage is way more better than Julianos in terms of everything, nightblades have this skill called Twisting Path which will proc the Scathing Mage set basicly every time you use that ability. In long fights our uptime is between 70 – 77% on the set effect but it only requires 60% uptime to be better than Julianos.
A new build I made- http://bit.ly/jdP0q
This comment is fake, using my name, don’t click the link please.
Congrats, dear friend. Number one build on the site right now 😉
Thanks! Didn’t expect that 😀
why dw over 2 staves – inferno and lightning?
Personal preference, brings quite a different playstyle if you want it. Like you see there’s a option for both set-ups, 2 staves or dual wielding, anything works 🙂
I would really like to try this build but problem is im a bosmer and im to lazy to create a 2 character amd level it up plus i don’t like having other characters. So any tip on this, and what do you suggest if i would like to switch it into a pvp build?
Id say give it a try on your bosmer, if you end up liking it and aim to doing serious end game content, buy a race change and change yourself to a dunmer or altmer.
As for the PvP, I dont know, maybe look up a build for it from someone else. Since I dont PvP at all itd be misinformative to give any kind of information on that.
How much DPS can you pull if you correctly follow rotations with little mistake? Noticed you commented that magblade was your main so I’m curious to know because I plan on maining a magblade as well.
40K is definitely possible to achieve with all the best in slot gear and no mistake rotation. This patch the stam builds take the win though in matter of single target DPS.
34K is what I can pull with this, Im not max CP and havent got a maelstrom staff drop yet, my gear is as above the the best in slot without the maelstrom inferno staff.
As for maining a magblade, Id say go for it! I have one of everything but magblade takes the win because of its uniqueness and it shines in tough content because of the heals and very great sustain. Also Ive been playing with the CP allocation alot and I think Ive found the perfect one through hours of testing, gonna update this build next month for the new patch, also the CP cap will be increased by 30 points so gonna take note of them also.
I prefer two staves for better survivability because it’s ranged but why lightning front bar? If i understand correctly the rotation stays the same so wouldn’t fire staff be better in front because in the rotation the light fire attacks deal more damage ( dunmer passives ) than lightning?
Lightning front bar because if we’re running out of resources, it’s easier to do heavy attacks and also you need to proc your Assassin’s Will Bow and the shield is on front bar too. I sometimes go with 2 Inferno Staves just because it’s slightly more damage, but in trials I prefer to go with lightning on front bar.
In resource heavy fights the rotation stays same but you can throw 1-2 heavy attacks instead of casting few spammables (funnel health). Also lightning staff provides better AOE damage, you can just drop your AOE’s on backbar and do heavy attacks on pack of mobs and they all get the damage from heavy attack.
Are you going to be editing this build for Horns of the Reach or making a new one?
Thanks!
Yes, I’m planning on updating this for Horns Of The Reach update!
I noticed you updated the build but I dont see what changed?
Just fixed some typos, added a new CP allocation and made the overall text more clearer. Nothing big!
For Staff/Staff BiS gear, which is better for helmet – iceheart or ilambris? Just confused why ilambris is in front of iceheart
It depends which is better, the difference is situational and very small, which is why I wrote them both down there.
One piece Ice Heart offers a good amount of crit, but if you dont need more, then just wear full monster set like Grothdarr or Ilambris.
Hey do you have a video of your rotation? I’m following the rotation properly but I seem to run low or run out of resources after 3-4 rebuffs and I just wanted to see how your heavy attack weaving looks like.
I dont have a video at the moment, but Ive been thinking about taking one soon.
There are many important factors you need to make sure of if you want to have your sustain right.
First off, I dont use heavy attacks at all on 3 Million health fight for example, I think around 4-5 Mil health is sustainable without having to do any heavy attacks.
Make sure you use spell power potions, not regular Essence Of Magicka, the difference is over 2K magicka per potion. Make sure you have Elemental Drain running, thats 300 magicka/s. Make sure your rotation is as close to perfect as you can get it, fast light weaves between every ability to ensure maximum potential of Siphoning Attacks, also make sure you let it run down before you refresh that ability. Vampire Stage 2 helps a bit, also having all passives from mages guild skill line along having Inner Light slotted on your both bars. Check your CP allocation aswell, 100 arcanist, 76 tenacity is what I run always to make sure every % counts.
Regarding Scathing mage outperforming Julianos, it seem that twisting path skill geting a nerf and no longer proc scathing as it use to after Horn Of The Reach update, would julianos be better than scathing? Or am I missing something here?
Yep, Julianos beats scathing mage in most situations, which is why I no longer recommend using it.
I have no mention about the set on this build anymore aswell.
Argonian is listed 4th for races, is it viable for this? I’ve always liked Argonian in other elder scrolls games. Also i commented on your other build would you recommend this build or your stamina build? Ive been more of a melee combat guy in other elder scrolls games and mmo’s ive had eso for a while but this will be my first character im making for it
Yes argonian is viable, but the worst of “viable” options. If you really like it, go for it, especially if you’re a new player!
In the end-game you might find yourself missing a little bit of damage and slightly weaker sustain compared to dunmer or altmer but to be honest its nothing to be worried about!
Also saw your comment on that one, answered there!
Have you seen the patch notes? Is mothers sorrow still worth getting? Considering the nerf to The Shadow and Sorrows buff from 2470 to 1924
No I dont really think it is, actually I just listed in there just incase it becomes a new meta but gonna remove it soon.
Hi there.
You updated your build considering patch notes 3.1.5 but I REALLY think you should remove any mention of “BiS” for the moment and write that it’s a “Work In Progress”.
There is no BiS at the moment, especially considering that they clearly announced that beefing up IA with the Mother’s Sorrow buff was a mistake that they will soon correct.
Thanks.
Yes I am aware of that, anyways 5x Julianos, 5x Moondancer is gonna be “BiS” no matter what for Dual Wielding set-up.
I havent got time to make any further edits to the build but gonna have some free time soon so expect some new information to come out as I test more.
in case you want an easy to get gear alternative you can also use necropotence and the shades, thats what im currently doing and it works pretty decenlty, i get around 50k magicka and the shades are nice since they don’t die and also help to keep the major defense buffs up…only drawback is that you loose one skill slot
I have another quick question wornlocc, clearly the main difference between stamina and magika nightblades is you are using magika over weapon attacks but what are the other noticeable differences and which tends to be better and more fun to play?
Well hard to write it exactly here but the difference is huge in terms of gameplay.
Magicka has better survivability due they have crazy heals and shields to use. Abilities you use are very different except for the class skills which works quite the same way on both magicka and stamina.
Stamina is more reliant on your movement and you have to be aware of whats happening around you, you cant just shield up and survive mechanics. If youre looking to solo play, not your best pick but works well in any content however. They achieve a little bit higher single target DPS however, but its more of a risk=reward thing in group content since you have to be withing melee range to enemies all the time which makes you more vulnerable to incoming damage.
There are many more things that are different, your best choice is to try them out or watch some videos to see how theyre different overall.
hello wornlocc, i have a question, if im not able to do trial which set you think is better for me??(i already have grotharr and julianos).
Thx men and good job for your build.
Hey there! Use Willpower jewelry until you get Infallible Aether or Moondancer.
Thanks alot!
How about switching Harness magicka to back bar and Impale to front bar along with putting VMA lightning staff backbar and a infused Moondancer fire staff front bar? Would the dps loss be too severe? I would like to bring at least slight group utility in form of Blockade of Storms. Thanks for answers.
Yeah you can switch between Harness and Impale, doesnt make a real difference to be honest.
Also Lightning Staff backbar works well, but I dont recommend going for 75 Thaumaturge for Off Balance buff however, since you lose alot of damage from other sources and the uptime of Off Balance isnt high enough to gain any real DPS boost from it, unless you run a trial with magsorcs only… But Blockade Of Storms is great for group support, go for it!
Looking at your updated build on your website, are the equips – lightning back / inferno front best for altmer? because im playing dunmer and not using fire blockade seems like a waste. Haven’t played in a few months so excuse me if im missing something.
Doesn’t work anytime i trying pvp
